Joe Cuba was the architect of boogaloo — the short-lived, joyful collision of Afro-Cuban rhythms and American R&B that electrified New York in the mid-1960s. His Sextette hit “Bang Bang” became an anthem, and “Comin’ At You” captured the full range of what he could do: pachanga, guáguancó, cha-cha, mambo, son. A musician who built a bridge between two worlds and made both sides want to dance.
