The Jimmy Castor Bunch — "It's Just Begun"
For me, the song that starts it all, of course, is “It’s Just Begun” which I heard for the first time on that short-lived but needle-drop-dream of a show called Vinyl on HBO. The dizzying horns circling in on the staccato lyrics is just a pure distillation of what funk is. But this album isn’t just a one-hit wonder. "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" is one of the most sampled breaks in hip-hop history — and it lives on this record. The Jimmy Castor Bunch built a whole funk universe around that one groove: horn stabs, a caveman rap, and a beat that Beastie Boys, Eric B. & Rakim, and Ice Cube all came back to decades later. This is the source material.
Genre: Funk / Soul
Year: 1972
Label: RCA Victor — LSP-4640
Country: US
Condition: Media: VG+ / Sleeve: VG
Notes: Rockaway Pressing, Dynaflex. Diecut on top-left corner of sleeve (promo cutout). Barely audible surface noise.
