The norteño sound of the Texas-Mexico borderlands is one of the most deeply rooted musical traditions in all of North America — accordion-driven, rhythmically relentless, built from polkas, corridos, rancheras, and cumbias that tell the stories of the people who made that region their home. Conjunto Los Gavilanes worked squarely in that tradition, and Canciones Y Polkas Del Puro Norte is exactly what the title promises: songs and polkas of pure norteño. Recorded in 1967 on Audio Mex and pressed in the US, this is regional Mexican music from the golden era of that sound — the kind of record that circulated in communities, not record stores, and survived through use rather than preservation.
